Getting Started List

A Getting Started List for New Students

Here is a list of some of the things that you may want to take care of as you transition into the University of Miami community.

___

Obtain a photo ID and access card:
A photo ID is required at all times to gain admittance into campus buildings. ID and access cards are distributed in the Medical Center Security Department, which is located on the Roof Garden (RG) level of Dominion Towers (the tall pink building). Hours of operation are available on the Security Department's website. Before going you will need to to get an Interdepartmental Requisition Form (IDR) from your department to pay for costs and also make sure that you have been entered into the Human Resources System (305-243-6551).

___

___

Find parking or public transportation to the medical school campus
Parking is available throughout the medical campus, but be aware that due to a limited number of spaces, you may be placed on a waiting list. Visit the Medical Center Security Department Parking office's web pages for more information about parking options, fees, and access. Note that the Parking Office is located in the Security Office in the Roof Garden of Dominion Towers. If you are placed on a waiting list and need parking in the meantime, parking spaces are readily available in the privately-owned Dominion Towers Parking Garage. Call 305-324-0900 for more information. The office is located on the first floor of Dominion Towers (1400 NW 10th Avenue, Suite 101).

The Metrorail, an elevated rapid transit system that runs through Miami, has a station that is conveniently located at the medical school. Monthly Metrorail passes are available to UM employees at a discounted price, but must be ordered a month prior to the month you would like to make use of the pass. There is also a pre-tax payment option available. To inquire about passes, contact the Office of Medical Finance at 305-243-9190.

___

Find Housing
Two residential buildings are located near the medical school campus: Dominion Towers and Jackson Towers. Many employees and students also find housing in Miami Beach (a 10-15 minute commute), Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Miami, North Miami Beach and Kendall (in apartments that are conveniently located near the Metrorail). The Office of Graduate Studies (RMSB 6005) also has booklets with apartment ads. Some links to help you in your search:
