The development of the Sheila and David Fuente Graduate Program in Cancer Biology is one of the most important initiatives in meeting the long-term goals of the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and its mission. I am very grateful for the efforts that have gone into making this goal a reality.
Especially noteworthy is the program’s two-tiered mentoring structure in which students interface with both basic scientists and clinical oncologists/researchers to develop their ability to design multidisciplinary interdependent research programs in which science problems are driven by unmet clinical needs.
Miami is a true melting pot, with exceptional diversity at every level of our institutions. We currently train a large number of physicians and scientists and are enthusiastic about the opportunity of offering the interdisciplinary Sheila and David Fuente Graduate Program in Cancer Biology at UM/Sylvester. This program provides an exceptional forum for students to flourish under the guidance of renowned researchers and clinicians to develop meaningful careers in science. We have worked hard in building UM/Sylvester into a truly collaborative center of excellence over the past several years and the Sheila and David Fuente Cancer Biology Graduate Program is a tangible result of these efforts.
