Getting Started List
Here is a list of some of the things that you may want to take care of as you transition into the University of Miami community:

Gather necessary paperwork for your new position:
photocopy of your diploma, CV (UM format suggested), official transcripts and/or a copy of a valid unrestricted Florida Medical License (if applicable). You will be asked to complete other forms that should be provided by the program or department that you will be a part of. A complete list [pdf] of required documents is available.

Get to know the medical school campus:
An on-line map of the campus is available or you can pick up a paper copy at the Office of Graduate Studies of the 6th floor or the Rosenstiel Medical Sciences Building in room 6005.

Familiarize yourself with resources available to you:
Medical Information Technology has put together a "Guide for Newcomers", which outlines the major information services available to the University of Miami Miller School community. " A Guide for Researchers" is also available, which provides a general overview of some of the research resources at the Miller School.

Setup access to MyUM

What is MyUM?
MyUM is a web portal for faculty, staff and students. All UM employees can access their payroll and benefits information at MyUM and students can register for courses, find grades, and check tuition and loan status.

How do I start accessing MyUM?
To access MyUm you need a CaneID and password.Your initial CaneID is created for you when you begin as an employee.  (You have the ability to change it, as long as you pick something that no one else is using.) To find your CaneID go to the MyUM site login page: http://myum.miami.edu/,  and click on the "First time using CaneID" link.  You will be asked to provide your SSN or C-number, and your birth date to authenticate your identity. The system will then lead you through the steps to set a password for the CaneID, and also offer you the opportunity to change the ID to a different set of characters.  Once you have your CaneID and password, you can use them to login to MyUM.

Obtain a photo ID and access card:
A photo ID is required at all times to gain admittance into campus buildings. ID and access cards are distributed in the Medical Center Security Department, which is located on the Roof Garden (RG) level of Dominion Towers (the tall pink building). Hours of operation are available on the Security Department's website. Before going you will need to to get an Interdepartmental Requisition Form (IDR) from your department to pay for costs and also make sure that you have been entered into the Human Resources System (305-243-6551).

Setup an e-mail account:
Instructions are available on Medical Information Technology's Web site.

Check your health insurance and benefits:
Domestic Postdocs - Please check with your postdoctoral advisor to find out more information about your health insurance coverage, as mechanism and level of coverage will vary depending on your title and source of funding.

International Scholars -- Check with International Student and Scholars Services about making sure that you are properly covered for health insurance.

Find parking or public transportation to the medical school campus
Parking is available throughout the medical campus, but be aware that due to a limited number of spaces, you may be placed on a waiting list. Visit the Medical Center Security Department Parking office's web pages for more information about parking options, fees, and access. Note that the Parking Office is located in the Security Office in the Roof Garden of Dominion Towers. If you are placed on a waiting list and need parking in the meantime, parking spaces are readily available in the privately-owned Dominion Towers Parking Garage. Call 305-324-0900 for more information. The office is located on the first floor of Dominion Towers (1400 NW 10th Avenue, Suite 101).

The Metrorail, an elevated rapid transit system that runs through Miami, has a station that is conveniently located at the medical school. Monthly Metrorail passes are available to UM employees at a discounted price, but must be ordered a month prior to the month you would like to make use of the pass. There is also a pre-tax payment option available. To inquire about passes, contact the Office of Medical Finance at 305-243-9190.

Find Housing
Two residential buildings are located near the medical school campus: Dominion Towers and Jackson Towers. Many employees and students also find housing in Miami Beach (a 10-15 minute commute), Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Miami, North Miami Beach and Kendall (in apartments that are conveniently located near the Metrorail).
